Belgian designer Martin Margiela’s 1989 show took place in a derelict playground on the outskirts of Paris, with the community’s children sitting pride of place in the front row. For the seats that the cross-legged children hadn’t already claimed, it was first come, first served. This was enough to push fashion critics out of their comfort zone before the first model even stepped out.
Self-titled bad boy Stephane Raynor opened BOY-London on London’s King’s Road in 1976, with a style that borrowed from the irreverence of punk and the full eye makeup of the New Romantics. Once considered a rival to the Westwood-McLaren partnership, the brand had a similar streetwise irreverence and thrived during the ’80s. It subsequently fell off the fashion radar in the ’90s, however, due to financial mismanagement and questionable design choices .
