11 billion litres of raw sewage was dumped into Britain’s rivers and coastal waters by water treatment works in a single year. The government has so far rejected recommendations to force water companies to install volume monitors.
“There is still no data readily available showing the volume of untreated sewage discharges,” Professor Hammond told“Water companies have some idea, but the regulators and the Government probably have no idea. Sewage detritus in rivers, on beaches and in seas offers clues but may not reflect the volume of discharges.”
Jamie Woodward, professor of physical geography at the University of Manchester, has previously warned that the lack of volume monitors at most water sites “leaves the data open to manipulation”. Ministers have so far rejected recommendations by MPs on the environmental audit committee to force water companies to install volume monitors.
The water industry has promised to triple investment in the sewerage network to £10bn this decade after apologising for failure to act on sewage pollution.
