Harley Street physician, Doctor Mary Scharlieb described the sport as "unsuitable" for a women's physical frame.

In 1949, Bolton Wanderers scout, Percy Ashley, founded Manchester Corinthians Ladies FC so that his daughter, Doris, could play in a team. The team played at Fog Lane Park, Didsbury, with players often resorting to clean themselves in the duck pond after games due to the lack of facilities. As well as official league matches in 1971, The FA launched a women's knock-out competition which was later become The FA Women's Cup.
