Kyle Shanahan previously said the backup QB competition between Sam Darnold and Trey Lance could continue during the regular season.
Lance, 23, began last season as the 49ers’ starter before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. He’s entering his third NFL season.Lance was not on the field as the 49ers began their Wednesday practice. The team’s quarterbacks were in this order: Purdy, Darnold andLance was in the building on Wednesday when the quarterback news broke but was allowed to sit out the session. The 49ers are expected to address the situation following practice.
Darnold has been sharp throughout training camp and the preseason. He’s thrown only two interceptions in practice, one of which bounced off his receiver. Avoiding picks was perhaps Darnold’s most important task in securing the No. 2 role.Having a full quarterback room has been paramount for the team after they literally ran out of passers in the NFC Championship in January. In that way, having Purdy, Darnold and Lance in the same quarterback room seems to be what the team wants.
