Phoenix Suns and Mercury owner Robert Sarver has put both franchises up for sale. Although the move comes as a punishment for his actions, early estimates indicate that both teams could sell for more than $3 billion. MikeVorkunov has more ⤵️

. In defending the severity of the penalty, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said the blow to Sarver’s reputation was an additional hit that would be hard to measure, “a huge public issue now around this person.”

Though that might turn out to be true, the suspension and the blowback to his behavior might also end up making Sarver roughly $1 billion richer.in what will eventually be a coda to an 18-year term at the helm of both organizations. Early reads of the market for the teams include a high-end estimate that the Suns and Mercury could sell for more than $3 billion, with Sarver profiting the most from the sale as the controlling owner of both organizations.

“In our current unforgiving climate, it has become painfully clear that that is no longer possible — that whatever good I have done, or could still do, is outweighed by things I have said in the past,” Sarver said in a statementNational
