'It's knocked everybody on this estate sick'
As police tape flapped in the wind, three forensic tents stood on an estate and TV news crews gathered, a community in shock grieved. Harpurhey woke to the news that a 14-year-old schoolboy had died following a stabbing on Tavistock Square yesterday .
"It's just not a place that's safe anymore, especially for kids. They should be out living their lives instead of being involved in crime and whatever else is going on in the world." A mum-of-three who visited the scene to pay her respects said: "Too many children stay here, it's not good. It's very bad, I worry a lot for them.
Shufe Awad, 44, said she heard 'voices screaming' from her home as the terror unfolded. She said: "Sometimes it's scary. I have my son, he's 13, I'm scared to leave him alone in the house. Sometimes I think it's not safe.A neighbour of Shufe's, who was getting into a car, told the Manchester Evening News that groups gathering on the square had been an issue 'for years'.
One woman, who stopped to speak to Coun Karney as she walked past the cordon with her granddaughter, spoke of a relative who was 'too scared' to let her 17-year-old son out. "When is something going to happen on this estate?" she asked. Not all residents on the estate felt the same way though. One neighbour said youths 'just hang about' but he had not had any problems, while another said the tragedy was a 'surprise'.
Matthew added: "It's knocked me for six last night. I couldn't look out, I couldn't bring myself to do it. I've got a 16-year-old son. It's just not good. "He was polite and the most loving person. He would always put other people first without a thought. He was an amazing brother and son to his parents and siblings. Our hearts are left broken. Rest in Paradise to the most kindest soul.”
