“I’m reminded of what I love so much about us; I’m reminded that there is an us,” British-Nigerian YomiAdegoke writes of a life-affirming trip to the Bahamas.

, and made a stop at its most beautiful island, Exuma, with its crystal clear waters and adorable swimming pigs. The warm air and wonderful views were rivalled only by the wonderful warmth of the people.

As I browsed souvenirs on my arrival, the lady manning the stall asked me where I’m from, provoking a discussion on one of my favourite topics: Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry. “I love your films,” she said. “I watch them every week!” Every third person I met mentioned that they religiously watched our soapy dramas. They struck up conversations about how they’d always wanted to visit Africa, about the similarities between our cuisines and culture.

The internet generally distorts our relationships. People often seem far closer than they are in comment sections, men and women appear to constantly be at war. But one of the most tiring distortions are the so-called “diaspora wars” that break out online, described by Urban Dictionary as “skuffles [sic] of hatred and culture clash between different members of a diaspora”.
