AI companies that help students 'double cheat' by masking the use of ChatGPT in essays are actively targeting students – and universities don't know how to stop it
CopyGenius, an online tool that “rephrases” bits of text into more human-sounding language, has posted a series of videos on TikTok boasting that it can help students evade AI detectors used by universities.
Phrasly.AI, another online tool which advertises itself as the “best AI detection remover” on the market, has several paid partnerships with popular influencers on TikTok aimed at university students. Both AI tools and other similar products offer free trials to users, before charging them around £15 a month to “rewrite” up to 40,000 words.
“For a few years, we’ve been increasingly aware of things like essay mills penetrating students and social media groups to sell themselves,” he told“And now we’re aware of companies more at the AI end of the spectrum beginning to target students. There are rewriting tools that are explicitly aimed at students trying to get under the radar of AI detectors. They’re essentially cheat bots. It is a live concern – there’s been a sudden push over the summer.
It comes as a “significant majority” of universities in the UK have now ditched the AI detection feature offered by Turnitin, the leading plagiarism checker used by universities, according to UCISA, a professional body for digital educators.
