CLEVELAND — As Jim Eisenreich stands on the track behind home plate at Progressive Field, he reflects on the last time he planted his shoes in the Cleveland dirt. The bullpens have relocated. The scoreboard has ballooned in size. The traffic bustling along East 9th St. now serves as the center-field backdrop. Eisenreich points toward right-center. “That,” he says, “looks familiar.” He recognizes the sea of forest-green seats. He sees them every few days when he clicks play on his most treasured highlight. That’s also where two men from Toronto, with no allegiance to the Indians or...

As a kid, then a college player and then a minor-leaguer, the diamond was his sanctuary. There, he could focus. There, he could thrive. There, he was the star player who stood out for his steady bat, not for his tics.He never thought the tics would be an impediment on the field — until they were.

After a three-week hiatus, he appeared in 10 more games, and then his season was over, his condition too great of a hurdle to clear.The year after that, 12 games, and then his season was over. That’s why a quiet environment made him — and still makes him — uncomfortable, and can trigger his symptoms. When he reached junior high and finally had autonomy on where he sat, Eisenreich darted to the back of each classroom, away from the spotlight.

One college athlete posted a photo with Eisenreich and announced she suffers from Tourette Syndrome, after keeping her diagnosis a secret for 13 years. Eisenreich entered the Royals’ spring training clubhouse in Fort Myers, Fla., and scanned the room: Brett, Frank White, Willie Wilson, all accomplished veterans for a team plotting to return to the World Series. White welcomed him. He could exhale.
