It all started back in 1936
A trip to Skegness and Butlin's has long been synonymous with the good people of Nottinghamshire. We've flocked to the Lincolnshire coast in our thousands every year to enjoy the seaside and famous red coat hospitality that the resort is famous for since it first opened.
The ribbon was cut by Hull pilot Amy Johnson, famous for being the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. Mr Butlin is said to have got the idea from his memories of spending his youth at a Canadian summer camp. It would have been totally unrecognisable. Historians say that many of the bright colours that defined the camp were painted over, the dance hall became an armoury, and the rose beds were dug up to make room for air raid shelters.
The airfield meant that Butlin's could also offer things like sightseeing trips and pleasure trips. The next innovation came in the Fifties, with the advent of indoor heated pools that could be used no matter the weather. "The Butlin family sold the business to the Rank Organisation." The Eighties were off to a sad start with the death of Mr Butlin at the age of 80.
The camp's miniature railway was done away with and many of the chalets - as well as the dining hall and cinema - were demolished, but new pools soon took their place. The new owners tried to battle against the changing tides throughout the Nineties, but several Butlin's venues, including Clacton, had to be sold.
