Oleksiy Arestovych was the second most popular man in Ukraine after the president. But he has never been afraid to swim against the tide.
Arestovych has a background in theatre and psychology,in 2014. He saw combat as a reconaissance officer.
With the full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year, he became the most visible public face of the Zelensky administration, earning the title of ‘therapist-in-chief’ through upbeat video messages assuring the public of victory. His popularity soared,But last April the spokesman suggested that a missile which killed 60 civilians in Dnipro could have been fired by Ukraine’s air defences not Russia. The Kremlin took the same line.
As a commentator he can speak freely, a rare trait in a wartime society where message discipline matters. But even in Zelensky’s office, he spoke out on controversial subjects such as Ukrainian soldiersbefore confronting Chechen Muslim troops, and the torture of Russian prisoners. “If we made mistakes I said so directly in the president’s eyes,” he said. “If our people are going into darkness I will ask them to come back to the light.”
The independent streak, and what some regarded as a taste for self-promotion, ruffled feathers. “Half of the country hates me and half loves me,” he says lightly. There is a common view in the halls of power in Kyiv that Arestovich harbours political ambitions, perhaps even for a shot at the presidency.
