A 49ers fan coached the Prague Black Panthers, the Czech Republic's best American football team, to arguably its best season ever.
“It’s kind of crazy that a Czech team has more talent than some Austrian and German league teams now,” Ford said. “It’s just a bunch of Czech guys and three Americans. It kind of pisses some of the guys off playing in the Austrian League that a Czech team is winning games against Austrian teams because they have all Austrian refs, Austrian league office, Austrian everything.Austrian League rules limit PBP to those three American players.
As the youth program’s coach, Štiegler has also developed many of his current teammates. That includes PBP’s offensive line, a homegrown group of young Czech 300-pounders who take their job so seriously that they’ve committed to sporting football-related tattoos. Left guard Petr Marek has a diagram of “Power Right,” complete with the pulling assignment of his position, permanently inked on his right arm.PBP draws 1,200 fans per game.
“But it was totally fantastic,” he said. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think that someday we’d have a league, that we’d even play a game, that we’d have a national team.” That was in 1991, after two German league teams played an exhibition in Prague. A group of Czech fans liked the game so much that they decided to form their own team. The initial club split into the Prague Lions and Prague Panthers, and Krejbich joined the latter as a 16-year-old in 1991.
