As the Packers transition to just their third full-time starting quarterback in the past three decades, the last two being Hall of Fame talents, their coach made sure to caution anyone expecting Jordan Love to replicate what Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers did before him.
That’s because there’s little doubt Rodgers would still give the Packers a better chance to win, even if they decided this offseason it was best to take the keys from the four-time MVP and hand them to a 24-year-old who has been sitting on the bench for the majority of the past three seasons. “Certainly, I think we’re fooling ourselves if we think he’s going to go out there and perform at a level to the likes of an Aaron Rodgers,” Matt LaFleur said at the NFC coaches breakfast at the annual league meeting last month. “This guy is a once-in-a-lifetime, generational talent. I don’t think it necessarily started that way when he first started, but he progressed into that.
As much as the Packers have seen Love against the starting defense in practice, in sparse regular-season action and in meetings every day for the past three years, they still don’t know exactly what they have in him.
“I think we all have to temper our expectations for him,” LaFleur said. “It’s different when you’re going into a game versus when you’re starting a game. It’s going to be a process, but it’s going to be exciting for him, for us.”
