The UK's evacuation effort in Afghanistan is 'down to hours now, not weeks', the Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has said. Get the latest from Afghanistan:
'Increasingly impossible' to identify eligible Afghans at airport, says former MoD boss
"I know, for example, tons of Reuters employees who are fully qualified to be flown out simply can't get through the crowds to get themselves identified, processed and onto various aircraft." Ms Mort said the Taliban had"made it perfectly clear" that they want Unicef to stay, adding that there was"constructive" dialogue between the two.
Defence committee chair Tobias Ellwood, who himself served in Afghanistan, has said it is"so important" for the US to extend the deadline to withdraw from Afghanistan.Speaking to BBC Radio 4's World at One programme, Mr Ellwood said the situation in Afghanistan is"one of the most complex and dangerous missions in a generation" and is"getting more dangerous by the day".
Ben Wallace has repeatedly admitted that not everyone will be able to be evacuated from the country by British troops. He said we could now see foreign fighters travelling to Afghanistan and Pakistan for terrorist training, as happened in the 1990s. Even given this, one his more recent apparent broadsides at the former president and his fans has prompted more anger than normal. However, the prime minister's spokesperson said the UK will have to withdraw at the same time as the US and the government is still working towards a deadline of 31 August - but no hard deadline has been set.
"We're fully conscious of that," they said."This is the first phase of our operation, evacuating largely British nationals and those under the ARAP scheme, out in the time that we have. He was expected to help organise institutions and address the economic issues facing the population, a statement from Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said. While the UK aim has been to get out 1,000 British nationals and Afghan allies per day, the US evacuation is going at 10 times the pace. WHO regional emergency director Dr Richard Brennan told Reuters:"While the eyes of the world now are on the people being evacuated and the planes leaving, we need to get supplies in to help those who are left behind."UK has not set a hard deadline for leaving Afghanistan - but could not continue without US troops
Late on Sunday, the Taliban's Alemarah information service said hundreds of fighters were heading towards Panjshir but that there had been no immediate confirmation of any fighting. The Russian president, in comments at an online summit of regional leaders, also said it was important to keep a close eye on the Afghan drug trade.
"The most urgent thing is to make as much use of what limited capacity there is over the next few days perhaps - we do not know how long - to get people who are at most immediate risk out of the country," he told Sky News. The shooting came as the Taliban sent fighters north of the capital to eliminate pockets of armed resistance to their rapid takeover earlier this month.
He said soldiers"in these appalling circumstances are doing an extraordinary job", adding that the situation was"extraordinarily fragile", with Taliban forces and British and American forces"literally yards apart".Asked about the UK's global response, Lord Darroch said:"I think global Britain, post-EU exit, is an interesting and potentially sensible path for the UK to go on.
