"The organisation is more than just about swimming. It's about support and advice, the social side and we encourage members to meet up," says founderVISIONARY Katrice Rodrigues is a black swimming tutor who is looking to use her platform for change. To do this she has set up Afro Aquatics, a weekly swim class for women from the Afro-Caribbean community based in Leicester.
So, I thought I’m just going to put some lessons on, as a not for profit so that there’s the opportunity for the black community to come together and then Afro Aquatics can train people so that then they can become swim teachers.I started swimming competitively from the age seven, and at the time, I was the only Afro-Caribbean person in the whole club, it was all-white British families and there’s still, from what I’ve seen, a low representation.
That’s another type of discrimination because the cap is bigger, it’s going to have more drag, it’s going to make people less streamlined, it’s not going to give anyone an advantage, so why it was banned? Also, religious beliefs, people from different faiths want to cover up or will want to swim with the same gender, which is why we started off with a women’s only group.I was worried I wouldn’t get enough people interested, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised that it’s been really popular, a lot of interest.
