Wilko went into administration two weeks ago, putting the future of its 400 shops and 12,500 staff in doubt
The budget retailer currently has more than 6,000 jobs available across its UK stores. Britain’s fourth-largest supermarket chain recently announced that it is creating 800 jobs in new stores over the coming months.
However, administrators at PricewaterhouseCoopers said claims the stricken retailer would close stores next week were “speculation”. The GMB union issued another statement later on Wednesday evening saying closures would occur “within weeks” rather than “within a week”. Some stores may still be bought, either individually or as part of larger packages, as part of the insolvency process. Rivals Poundland, B&M, The Range and Home Bargains were reportedly among the firms interested in parts of the Wilko business.
