On an album of songs made to be played live, Vincent Furnier still growls like a cat in heat
It should come as no surprise that Vincent Furnier loves a concept album. This is the man who chose the innocuous Alice Cooper as a stage name and developed live gigs that rival even the most twisted vaudevillian sideshows for their dark inventiveness and sheer drama . Of course he loves a concept, is built around the various states of life on the road and was recorded and co-written by his live band, whose skills he wanted to show off.
At the grand old age of 75, Cooper still growls like a cat in heat and peppers his songs with campy asides. On “I’m Alice” he rhymes a needless introduction to his alter ego like a demented master of ceremonies. He declares himself “the master of madness” over trudging music that doesn’t convey much in the way of insanity, but if the opening track lacks spark, the rest of the record does its best to make up for it.
