As I sat down in the hushed courtroom, I felt a wave of bewilderment and fear rising up and threatening to engulf me.
For the next seven years, my mum and dad tried to keep us safe by moving from one relative’s home to another., you have to do military service. That means fighting for the government against people they think oppose them, and that can mean you’ll be asked to kill people you know – friends, even family. I knew I couldn’t do it.At first, I tried to ignore the letters asking me to enlist, but then they came looking for me, so I fled.
All I knew about Rwanda was that it is in Africa, and it is known for the terrible genocide there in the 1990s. It felt like a punishment, but surely I haven’t done anything wrong? All I tried to do was not kill people.
