In recruiting, relationships matter. So it's little wonder why college basketball’s most dominant recruiter — John Calipari — leverages every connection he has. Lately, he’s taken that concept to the extreme, writes KyleTucker_ATH.

In the case of Knox, it’s complicated. Kevin was SEC Freshman of the Year at Kentucky in 2018 and the No. 9 pick in that year’s NBA Draft. He and the family have nothing but good things to say about his experience in Lexington. But here’s the catch: Kenny Payne was a big part of that experience — and then he followed Knox to the New York Knicks as an assistant coach, where their relationship grew even stronger.

A 6-foot-6 small forward from Tampa, Fla., the youngest Knox brother ranks fourth in scoring on Nike’s EYBL circuit through four games. He averaged 21.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.8 steals, shot 61 percent from the field and made 42 percent of his 3-pointers with Calipari watching over the weekend. Kentucky’s Hall of Fame coach and entire staff then hopped on a private jet to visit Knox and his family on Tuesday afternoon.

On Louisville: “ is like an uncle to me. He’s like Big Unc. Because he pushed Kev a lot, got Kev to where he is now. I’m not worried about the last season he had. The coaching staff basically told me, hey, you can come in here and turn it around.”team in 2003, but he might be the favorite to land Billy Richmond III 20 years later.

That could come in handy now, as Richmond’s son has blossomed into a 6-6 shooting guard who is flirting with a top-50 recruiting ranking. He has offers from hometown Memphis and Kentucky and would like to visit Louisville, Seton Hall and Kansas State.moved to New Jersey to play alongside UK signees Wagner and Bradshaw at Camden last season — and now he plays for their former grassroots team, the Nike-sponsored NJ Scholars.
