An estimated 190,000 Glaswegians came out on the streets to watch top cyclists whizz past during a race at the recent UCI cycling world championships, a councillor has claimed.Huge crowds came out to cheer on competitors during the Men Elite Road Race on August 6 as they raced around Glasgow streets.SNP councillor Chris Cunningham described the event as a "huge success" during Wednesday's operational performance and delivery scrutiny committee.
Councillor Cunningham said: "If you look the numbers for the elite men's race on the Sunday, it was estimated that 190,000 Glaswegians came out on the streets and watched that event."The council's Glasgow Household Survey 2023, which interviewed about 1000 people before the cycling competition, revealed only 18 per cent of city residents intended to go to one of the world champion events.
Councillor Cunningham said considering 190,000 spectators witnessed the Men Elite Road Race, "a significantly larger number of our citizens actually engaged in UCI than was their expressed intention before the event."The championships featured a number of events including BMX competitions and indoor cycling among others over the course of 11 days in August.
The survey also showed 43 per cent of people knew Glasgow was hosting the UCI event and 74 per cent thought the championships would have a positive effect on Glasgow.
