The plans are described as 'shocking'

A Nottinghamshire town's civic society has voiced its objection to plans for an apartment complex to be built beside a canal. Proposals were submitted for 29 modern apartments in Beeston in July.

Plans were submitted by the Planning & Design Group on behalf of Beeston Marina and are awaiting consideration by Broxtowe Borough Council. They have been branded as "shocking" by Beeston Civic Society due to their "impact on the character, heritage and biodiversity of the canalside".

In response to worries that the proposal was not in keeping with the surrounding area, the planners said it was designed to "reflect a high-quality contemporary architecture". Documents read: "It is not necessary for new development to mimic that of its surroundings or of pastiche design. "The proposal seeks to mitigate the effects of the development and enhance the biodiversity of the site with reference to the blue and green infrastructure of the canal." The applicant said the scheme was "well balanced in terms of making the most effective use of brownfield land".
