Annika, Alibi, review: Could be the next Vera – but only if Nicola Walker sticks around

at the helm, it’s the one where she plays the eponymous DI Annika Strandhed of the Glasgow-based Marine Homicide Unit – Scotland’s waterways apparently having a murder rate similar to Midsomer or Morse’s Oxford.

This series began in 2021, and found a new audience when it was broadcast on BBC One earlier this year – new fans will not have had long to wait, and the second series began on the very same day that series one ended. That’s to say, with the kidnapped Annika being rescued from an exploding car before informing viewers –-style fourth-wall breaking is this show’s USP – that the father of her teenage daughter Morgan was none other than her colleague DS Michael McAndrews .

The plot of this episode involved a grisly murder being discovered recorded on a burner phone. The prime suspect was a cruise ship entertainment manager sacked for taking too broad an approach to his job title by selling drugs to the passengers. Riding tandem was the ongoing tension between busy mother and misunderstood teenager, Annika’s daughter Morgan and how Annika was going to break it to Michael that he was the father. “Michael’s probably going to ask why I waited 16 years,” she confided with us. Thanks for sharing, but we could probably have sussed that on our own. Then there was the PTSD that Annika chose to ignore throughout the opening episode.

Still, the fourth wall breaking does allow writer Nick Walker to share Annika’s inner thoughts without having to clumsily weave them into the dialogue. But then it’s not as if the hugely expressive Nicola Walker isn’t more than capable of conveying her mental state with a simple glance.
