'People are very anxious'
One of Northamptonshire's most outspoken councillors on knife crime has said another fatal stabbing is "very likely" to happen again. It comes as the fatal stabbing of university student Kwabena Osei-Poku on Sunday night marked the fifth serious knife attack in the county in as many weeks.
The recent spate of stabbing across the county began on March 22, when 16-year-old Rohan 'Fred' Shand was fatally stabbed in Kingsthorpe in the middle of rush hour. Two boys, 16 and 14, have pleaded not guilty to his murder and are awaiting trial at Northampton Crown Court. The 39-year-old is the chair of WNC's Diverse Community Forum, whose "mission statement" is to promote community cohesion between the different communities in West Northamptonshire. He is also one of the council's biggest campaigners against knife crime.
He explained he was attending the Stephen Lawrence 30th anniversary memorial at Northampton Guildhall on Friday, April 21. There he spoke to Superintendent Rachael Handford, police area commander for Northampton, who reportedly said to him "the reality is this is going to happen again."
