Millions of iPhone users are set to receive a payout from Apple after the company deliberately reduced the performance of devices.
The settlement stems from the ‘batterygate’ lawsuit, which accused the company of secretly throttling olderIn 2017, Apple’s iOS 10.2.1 update tweaked the performance of older iPhones with degraded batteries to prevent them from shutting down.released between 2014 and 2016. The only way to restore full performance was to replace the degraded battery.
The class action lawsuit, filed in December 2017, described the move as ‘one of the largest consumer frauds in history’.The tech company denied all allegations and entered into a settlement to ‘avoid burdensome and costly litigation’. The settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing by Apple, according to the US District Court for Northern California.
