Benjamin Netanyahu’s rag-tag coalition has only been in power a few days and already one of its far-right cabinet ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has visited a flashpoint Jerusalem holy site, in a new year harbinger of trouble to come 🔴 michael2day
Anyone with an interest in Israel – as a Jew or Arab – might be holding their head in their hands.
But maintaining this delicate balance does not interest Ben-Gvir and his ilk. Israeli extremists have long called for greater Jewish access to the holy site. Among the coalition’s plans, the most contentious will be a war on the courts, giving the Knesset the ability to overrule High Court of Justice rulings. Netanyahu will find it easier to shrug off the prosecutors. The Zealots will have a freer hand to continue invading Palestinian territory.
Four of the top five party leaders of the incoming coalition — Netanyahu, Aryeh Deri, Bezalel Smotrich and Ben-Gvir — have either been arrested, indicted, convicted or served prison time on charges of corruption or incitement to racism.
