The decision comes amid the ongoing NCAA probe into alleged recruiting violations under former coach Herm Edwards.
“In light of the ongoing investigation and our membership obligation to maintain the confidentiality of the matter, we will not be commenting further at this time,” Arizona State said in a statement.What to make of the decision
Given the allegations and proof against Arizona State, this is not a shock. But it’s difficult to understand why the school didn’t impose such a ban last season. That would’ve gotten the program more out front of this and better positioned the Sun Devils under first-year coach Kenny Dillingham.With a rebuilt roster, this season’s team is expected to struggle, but at least bowl eligibility was something to aspire to. The investigation and speculation have stretched for more than two years.
Dillingham took over with an NCAA investigation hanging over the program. He not only had to rebuild the roster but also rebuild program faith. He’s made great progress with both. Not extending his contract in this case would not send a great message.
