Armando Iannucci lost his mother last year during the early weeks of the first lockdown, “not from Covid,” he says, “but she was 94 and in a care home; so there was the starkness of the [restricted] funeral, which lots of families went through.” There was also the “sense of helplessness and of isolation” that seemed universal. Covid’s impact, he notes, was national and international, yet “everyone has their own personal history of the pandemic”.
