The sheer numbers of girls turning up to try out, in my view, is linked to the Lionesses It’s no longer a “boys game” at my school 🖊️ Hayley Wood-Thompson

who never gave up on her coaching dreams, to the mums who travel around the country to take their daughters to training, and the old pros who worked part time to finance their games – there is an army of people ready to take on that challenge.and asking for equal access to football in schools. On International Women’s Day the Government pledged to ensure all girls get a minimum of two hours’ access to PE every week..

My playing days might be numbered, at 34 I’m not nearly as fast as the strikers half my age I’m defending against. Bizarrely, I feel a sense of pride and hope for these girls, even when they leave me in the dust! The chance to enjoy, excel and expand their game is now literally at their feet.

Like so many others though, I’ll be waiting to seize on the squad’s success the second term starts again – making sure the magic of the cup isn’t forgotten and that every girl has the chance to lace up a pair of boots and feel the pure ecstasy of scoring a goal. It’s not just young girls that are inspired by the team – it’s me too.
