Just nine days ago the Angels clubhouse celebrated winning for the second straight night. They had just traded for two players and it seemed like the tide turning for a tortured franchise. Now, they've lost seven of eight while losing Trout & Ohtani.
The people that had been the backbone or were expected to be the backbone of this team’s success haven’t been as effective.“We’ve just got to keep putting our head down and keep grinding,” said Webb, who walked three and took the loss Wednesday. “Going out and playing hard baseball every day. That’s mainly it. These are some tough losses, but that’s what good teams are made of. Battling back through adversity.
There’s no doubt that this roster is better than last year. The question is if it’s better enough. Good enough to play well enough over 162 games and the ups and downs that come with it to actually make the playoffs. Starting pitchers like Tyler Andersson and Sandoval will need to be better. The bridge in the bullpen that has suddenly faltered needs to dominate. The bottom of the order cannot become a black hole of surefire outs. The Angels will need to put themselves in a position to justify being trade deadline buyers. And if they become buyers, team owner Arte Moreno has to be willing to take on additional payroll if needed.
