Police are removing prolific beggars from the area
Issues with 'aggressive begging' in a Nottingham suburb may have been made shifted from the city centre, a homeless charity has said. Framework, which provides housing and support to homeless people across the city, suggested the behaviour had worsened in Hyson Green - in particular around Asda - after a crackdown on begging closer to the centre.
The charity is working with Nottinghamshire Police, who said prolific beggars would be removed from the area. Framework's director of homelessness services, Steve Watson said: "There is no doubt that rough sleeping has increased generally over the last 12 months. "We understand that the crackdown on begging in the city centre may have shifted the problem to other locations, such as the Hyson Green area."Framework provides supported housing to homeless and vulnerable people across Nottingham; a relatively small proportion of this accommodation is in the Hyson Green area. In our experience we have seen no correlation between such accommodation and increased begging hotspots.
"Begging is a complex issue and not always related to rough sleeping, and/or homelessness: there is a popular misconception that people who are begging are homeless; this is very often not the case. We understand that in addition to begging, the public may also be concerned about others sleeping rough in the area.
"Our Street Outreach Team visits the area of Hyson Green every other day; we are working with two or three individuals in that location who are waiting to be housed as soon as possible. However, as is very often the case, this move is delayed by a severe shortage of accommodation in Nottingham and across the region."
