This retrospective cross-sectional study was approved by the Massachusetts General Brigham Research Ethics Board and the University of Washington Human Subjects Division, with waiver of informed consent from study participants owing to secondary use of EHR data. The study followed the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology reporting guideline.
The intent categories assigned by reviewers were assault, accidental, intentional self-injury, legal intervention, and undetermined. We differentiated cases of undetermined intent owing to a lack of information from those for which there was credible conflicting information about intent.
