Eligible patients completed a mandatory MBS educational seminar before scheduling surgery.

Eligible patients first participated in a 15- to 20-minute telephone or video interview in which trained study team members administered the verbal portion of questionnaires. On completion of the interview, participants were directed to complete the self-administered online questionnaire, which was delivered via email through REDCap. Participants were compensated with an emailed gift card for their participation after completion of the questionnaires.

Covariates included the following sociodemographic factors: age , sex , self-reported race and ethnicity , payer status , and BMI [<30.0, 30.0-34.9, 35.0-39.9, 40.0-49.9, or ≥50.0]). These covariates were chosen because previous studies have suggested they are associated with behaviors surrounding MBS utilization.
