In his early 20s, Louis Staples would scan Facebook photos of nights out he hadn't gone on and feel intensely insecure, now he doesn't care
A friend of mine, Chris, 38, from London, said that an ease at turning down plans might not all be about age, but how content you are in your life in terms of factors like romantic relationships or career goals. The more satisfied you are in these departments, he thinks that you’ll feel less need to chase fulfilment in social plans.
Perhaps I should brace myself for a return of Fomo later in life. But looking back to my early twenties, I’m embarrassed by my memories of looking at Facebook photos of nights out I either couldn’t go on and feeling intensely insecure. It was like I thought my friends would forget about me if I didn’t attend every plan.story, I don’t feel like that at all.
At 30, I now take a “less is more” approach to making plans, because one great night out is much better than four underwhelming ones. There is nothing better than the feeling of being at home and feeling glad you didn’t go out – and nothing worse than being on a night out you wish you’d RSVP’d “no” to.
I will be returning to Brighton Pride next year, but in general, my Fomo is rapidly being replaced by Somo . Because you know what I’m perfectly happy to miss out on? A hangover and a hailstorm of pending bank transactions.
