itself. Then again, there are a few scenes that look unpleasantly like you haven’t turned off the motion-smoothing on your home telly.

The sequel takes place some years after the original story in Pandora, with our favourite blue space cats, the Na’vi, led by Jake Sully and living a happy existence with his warrior wife and his several children. Their idyll is threatened when an old foe returns, and Sully and his family must escape to a neighbouring kingdom: a partly-underwater world, where they must learn to adapt to a totally different lifestyle from their forest environment. They do so with the help of a school of whale-like alien creatures, highly intelligent and hunted by humans for their valuable resources.

The problem is that the plotting is never as convincing as the world-building. There are real attempts, and in fits and starts, successes, at creating the epic scope of family drama and adventure befitting a well-detailed aquatic world of this scale. But Cameron’s visual skill exceeds his ability to eke emotion from the crowd; even in the most intense moments between father and son and so forth, there’s not much in the way of lingering emotional weight.
