Awaab Ishak: Family say racism played a part in toddlers death from mould in flat by S_Fleary1

THE FAMILY of a two-year-old boy who died from a respiratory condition caused by “extensive” mould in his flat say racism played a part in how they were treated by their housing association. An inquest into the toddlers death heard there was evidence of fungus in the little boys lungs and blood.

His father Faisal Abdullah told the hearing, he had called Rochdale Boroughwide Housing several times to complain about the conditions in the flat in Greater Manchester, but nothing was done. “Rochdale Boroughwide Housing we have a message for you – stop discriminating, stop being racist, stop providing unfair treatment to people coming from abroad who are refugees or asylum seekers, stop housing people in homes you know are unfit for human habitation,” they said.

She concluded the hearing by saying: “There is little doubt that the tragic death of Awaab Ishak will and should be a defining moment for the housing sector.”
