Aymeric Laporte is set to leave Manchester City and does so with many fond memories of his time at the club
If it is a sign of the defensive strength in depth available to Pep Guardiola that they are able to let Laporte go, there were several points during the player's five years in Manchester where he was one of the first names on the teamsheet. Just as Ilkay Gundogan could leave knowing he had played an instrumental role in winning Premier League titles, so too can Laporte.
Despite having signed 18 months after John Stones, Laporte displayed the mix of style, grit and class that embodied being a defender in a Guardiola side. This was a centre-back fans at the Etihad and in the Premier League were not used to seeing, and he was pretty much ever-present as the Blues won a clean sweep of domestic trophies in the 2018/19 season and almost managed 100 points again.
The Spaniard was also prone to lapses in concentration that could prove costly; Guardiola dropped him after one too many in November 2020 and Stones and Ruben Dias didn't let him back into the side again. It was telling again that similar happened after the 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest last season, with City moving on from what he is best at as the team shifted from back to front.
There was genuine shock at the London Stadium in the penultimate game of the campaign when Laporte was named in the starting line-up, days after his year looked to have been ended with an injury at Wolves. He battled on and did so again for the Aston Villa game; Fernandinho crumbled next to him yet Laporte managed to see it through.
