Far from the symbol of sexism some suggest she is, the toy has been challenging stereotypes for decades

This Christmas, I’ll be celebrating Barbie, the global fashion icon that has been teaching young girls the meaning of independence and empowerment since 1959. She has shown us women can be whatever we want to be: impeccably coiffed astronauts, surgeons, footballers, CEOs, chefs, with teeny, kitsch uniforms to match. We’ve watched her in dozens of movies, we’ve witnessed her love story, and, like all modern celebrities, she’s launched a wellness line.

First created by Ruth Handler after she observed her daughter playing with paper dolls, Barbie has inspired generations of young females, including myself. She “bought” her first Dreamhouse in 1962, over a decade before women were even allowed to open their own bank accounts in the UK. Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon but four years previously, Astronaut Barbie had already ventured into space. In 1973, she took on the role of a surgeon whenare female today.

Now 63 years old, she’s held down over 200 careers, including impersonating the Queen, Cher, Beyonce, Marilyn Monroe and Diana Ross. In her first year on the scene, she was sold over 300,000 times and sincebelow age 10 have befriended her, or at least took her home. Although the doll has sparked controversy for seemingly perpetuating body-image issues, racism and sexism, today, Barbie mirrors the culture we live in. Six decades ago, if Barbie were real, her waist would have been an unrealistically small 18 inches, her hair always perfectly blonde and pristine and her breasts got larger multiple times. Like the real world, though, Barbie has changed and in 2016, for the first time, she was released in a variety of body types.
