The former Scotland man reckons opposition teams targeted the Swede.
Celtic-daft Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan believes the Hoops will be better off defensively without “shaky” Carl Starfelt, insisting Maik Nawrocki is an upgrade in terms of his ability on the ball and believes new boy Gustaf Lagerbielke could be even better again.
However, the Swede departed for Spanish side Celta Vigo with Nawrocki arriving from Legia Warsaw and has featured in the opening two Scottish Premiership games of the season. He was joined this week by £3 million man Lagerbielke from Elfsborg and Bannan is excited by the new additions after fearing opposition sides were targeting Starfelt because he was right-footed playing on the left.
“It caused us problems and teams got on the front foot against us and if you’ve got someone on the other side as comfortable on the ball as Carter-Vickers then it kind of takes that plan away for opposing teams to press on Starfelt. Nawrocki looks comfortable on the ball so who do you press? Hopefully he’s as good as people say he is on the ball.
On signing Lagerbielke he added: “They’ve spent £3m which isn’t to be sniffed at. He needs to play, though. You can’t keep spending £3m or £4m - like the other team across the water…. they need to play otherwise people start to question it if he’s sitting on the bench. It was definitely a position Celtic needed to strengthen. With Starfelt going out and Carter-Vickers coming off at half-time …. I know you’ve got Stephen Welsh who came on and did really well and Kobayashi.
