At the outset, the home fans were right behind their team with vociferous support after Sunday’s horror show. Heung-Min Son had an early chance to cause mayhem in the United box but fluffed his lines with a woeful pass. Sancho was causing danger every time he received the ball and he had another effort cleared off the line by an alert Ivan Perisic.
Five minutes before the break Harry Kane and Hojberg engineered a move that eventually saw the England skipper just go wide with a left foot shot. Within moments Bruno Fernandes found Rashford – who was sprinting into the Spurs half. The England forward controlled the ball to make it 2-0 with a clinical drive.
A minute later the visitors should have extended their lead but having done the bulk of the work, Fernandes somehow hit the woodwork from six yards while the onrushing Aaron Wan-Bissaka saw his header palmed away for a corner by Forster.
