A BBC presenter leading the campaign to save the Beeb’s black local radio shows from...

that bosses had consulted them about plans to axe all black local shows and replace these with a single show on BBC Sounds.

“So when I mean the national share, and local programmes won’t be as they are, it would all be merged into one programme. “Fundamentally, it’s about the voices, the people who come and talk to me about Sickle Cell or about a great community celebration or something. Those people will not have the opportunity to have their voices aired on a [local show].

“Community Radio does not have the budget to do what we do week in, week out. So in a sense, it’s very scary to think there will not be a sufficient platform for black and Asian audiences. In a prickly appearance before MPs last week, Rhodri Talfan Davies the BBC’s director of nations, scoffed at suggestions that the shows faced the axe but criticised the idea that black shows should be “hermetically sealed at seven or eight in the evening.”
