The role of a conductor
This year’s eight-week whirlwind of concerts at the BBC Proms sees no fewer than 56 conductors performing with leading orchestras from the UK and around the world. Nowhere else can you see such a plethora of podium presidents – and such a range across nationalities, gender, tastes and personalities – all with the goal of extracting the best possible performance. For the audience, the result can be anything from exhilarating to gut-wrenching, from entertaining to life-changing.
But what does a conductor actually do? That person standing before the sea of players, back to the audience, waving their arms in some mystical form of semaphore. Here are the basic requirements in case you want to … err … turn your hand to it.Beating time is the most obvious task of the conductor. By setting the speed and showing the pulse – the rhythmic skeleton of the music, which can ebb and flow constantly – the conductor keeps the players in sync.
Before you go into rehearsal to communicate effortlessly with your players – exuding at all times the right combination of confidence and social grace – you have to cogitate, concentrate … and isolate. It’s just you and the score. You not only have to learn each instrument’s part so you can spot any wrong notes in rehearsal. You have to absorb all the minute indications showing the changes of tempo , the type of attack, the phrasing. What is the most important line at any moment, and what is going to cause problems with balance? You’ll draw on your extensive knowledge of what is stylistically appropriate for any composer.
