The 'beautiful but wasted' Preston docklands with huge potential to become a haven for families
After opening in the late 19th century, Preston Dock went on to become a vitally important transportation centre and a major employer. Some fear it has now become an underused resource but a major new attraction could soon change that - making the site a major regional attraction.
Demand for day trips also saw paddle steamers offering regular day trips to Blackpool, North Wales and the Isle of Man. Its use would wane over time though, while the difficulties maintaining a clear channel down the Ribble to the sea remained constraint, limiting the size of vessels and requiring constant dredging.
The number of people who parked facing the water while they ate inside their vehicles gives another insight into how much the location is enjoyed as a place to visit. At the same time, the Samaritans signs erected around the water shed light on the tragic associations with a history of suicides in this location.
Another visiter, Paul Keighley, has lived in Preston for around 14 years and believes its fortunes have waned in that time. A volunteer with community groups and food banks, he has seen demand increase at the same time footfall has fallen in his retail work. “I don’t think they maximised the potential when they developed this place a few years ago. I think there should have been a better range of things.”
Speaking when it reopened, Manager Martin Cavanagh told LancsLive that the pub was due a transformation and is now "much brighter". "We needed to get rid of the carpet and by changing the colour scheme, everything is so much lighter," he said.
