Members of the public can enjoy exclusive behind-the-scenes tours this August of a Grade I listed landmark. Stowe House, on the Northamptonshire/Buckinghamshire border, is throwing open its doors this summer.
Throughout the year, visitors can explore the State Rooms of the grand country home of the National Trust site. As a historical building housing a public school, some areas are out of bounds. However, with the pupils on summer holidays, some amazing rooms can be accessed from behind-the-scenes on a Secrets of Stowe tour. A guide will lead you into the Gothic Library – a masterpiece designed by the famous architect Sir John Soane with an exquisite fan-vaulted ceiling and a central painted armorial bearing 726 heraldic shields to marvel.
The house was established, not by a member of the nobility, but by a prosperous sheep farmer named Peter Temple. He saw the land at Stowe while taking his sheep to market at nearby Buckingham. In 1571, Temple leased the land at Stowe and his ancestor Richard Temple started to build what would become Stowe House in 1680, over 100 years later.At NorthantsLive we're more than just news.
