Meet Trey Meier, a rising junior on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s cross-country team who makes $12.50 an hour as an intern for the Kingfish, a baseball team in the Northwoods League. The 20-year-old Meier helps with the team’s marketing efforts, but his internship mainly entails being the team’s mascot, Elvis the kingfish.
Meier, a Packers fan and a Kenosha, Wis., native, works only on weekends. He showed up at Historic Simmons Field in Kenosha on Saturday for what he thought would be a typical day’s work at the 2022 Legends Celebrity Softball Game, but he soon found out it would be anything but. “The emcee who was running the game actually told me, ‘Oh, yeah, you’re gonna be doing the Oklahoma drill with AJ Dillon,'” Meier said in a phone conversation withThe Oklahoma drill is an old-school football drill in which two players lie on their backs a certain distance apart with the tops of their heads facing each other. When prompted, each person gets up, turns around and runs into the other as violently as possible. The last one standing wins., Green Bay’s backup quarterback.
Meier tried securing the kingfish’s head on his body, but it was too late. Dillon’s right shoulder brutalized his sternum. The kingfish head stood no chance, and Meier went airborne, horizontal and parallel with the ground.
