Drivers have been warned that common road courtesy could in fact be illegal.

Motorists have been warned that being a 'nice' driver might not actually be a good idea and could land them in a heap of trouble.

It's an integral part of British culture to be extremely polite to each other and that can often transfer onto the road. Simple things such as keeping the speed limit, indicating when changing direction, and following the other general rules of the road can communicate to other drivers that you are being respectful.

However, while it's a good idea to be courteous to other road users, certain behaviours could land you in trouble with the police. For example, flashing your lights to warn others of speed cameras down the road can result in a large fine and points on your licence, Wales Online reports.Research from comparethemarket.

Furthermore, turning off a car's full beam lights when other drivers are coming in the opposite direction and giving more room for learner drivers to follow are the second and third most common acts of driving courtesy in the UK - and are all perfectly legal. However, things turn sour when drivers warn others of speed traps, beep "your horn when going around tight bends" and "using your hazard lights to say thank you to someone behind you".

According to the price comparison site, beeping your horn on a tight bend can result in a £1,000 fine, meanwhile, using your hazard lights to say thank you to a driver behind you can result in an unlimited fine and up to nine points on your licence.
