Belfast's lord mayor has been accused of "hypocrisy" for opening a new zoo enclosure despite previously saying the display of caged animals "has no place in modern society".
The motion, which he seconded, said: "The display of caged animals in enclosures is wrong and unethical, it doesn't mirror in any way their natural habitat and has no place in modern society." She added: "The thousands of pounds spent on new cages to hold these animals captive could be better spent on legitimate in-situ conservation projects, which aim to protect animals in the wild - their true home.The zoo has three barbary lions, which are extinct in the wild. Their new enclosure includes 16 glass viewing windows, which staff said gives visitors "an up-close lion encounter".
