Even if you used no gas or electricity, daily standing charges cost over £300 each year.
Ofgem will lower the energy price cap from October 1 by £151 from the current £2,074 per year to £1,923 for millions of households across Scotland, England and Wales. The slight drop will benefit households on a standard tariff with typical usage, however, it’s important to remember that the price cap doesn’t relate to a cap on the total amount of money people will pay for using gas or electricity.
However, Mark Sait, CEO and founder of online money-saving and sustainability platform, SaveMoneyCutCarbon, explains that there are a few measures people should start doing now to build habits for winter that could help keep winter fuel bills down. Turn the thermostat down by one degree According to Sait, by turning down your thermostat by one degree you can save up to 10 per cent on your heating bill. The World Health Organisation states that a home at 18 degrees is the appropriate household temperature for a healthy adult, however, it’s important to note vulnerable or elderly households should not lower the temperature to avoid any health risks.
Reducing your regular wash to 30 degrees or even 20 degrees can help reduce your electricity usage by up to 40 per cent over the course of the year compared to higher temperatures. Most laundry detergents still work just as effectively at a cold wash as they do at higher temperatures, so not only are clothes kept nice and fresh, but your energy bills are kept low as well.
