Wrea Green has been named Lancashire's Best Kept Village a staggering 16 times
When you hear that one of the best things and beloved aspects of a village is it's green - which is effectively just a large patch of grass - it could well lead to some quizzical looks.
In fact, it has played a huge part in the rural Wyre village's multiple successes in the Lancashire Best Kept Village award, winning the comp a whopping 16 times and coming runner up in a further three years. This huge patch of grass is the beating heart of the village, with the cricket club training and playing home games there for more than a century, while the largest green in Lancashire is also a mecca for community fairs and social events.
Affectively known as The Dub, the area is tranquil and the perfect spot for reflection - and to treat the well-fed ducks and their offspring to a little extra. Anyone visiting The Green should also be aware of the ancient - and quirky - bylaws still in place to this day. Village pub The Grapes hugs the border of the green and offers a prime spot to enjoy a pint in the generous beer garden in the warmer months.
