The epicentre of deadly bird flu outbreaks has shifted from Asia to Europe in recent years, new research has found.
Their research shows that while outbreaks in 2016 and 2017 began in China, two new strains of the virus emerged in African poultry in 2020 then in European wild birds in late 2021. The study analysed outbreaks between 2005 and 2022 from around the world as well as 10,000 sets of viral DNA.
