Black prisoners and white staff should cook together to tackle racism - report by LeahMahon_
BLACK MEN in prison and white staff could cook meals together in a bid to tackle cultural differences and racism, a new report has suggested.
“We didn’t come in [commissioning this report] and say, ‘this is what we think you should do’. They just told us and said food is really important in our culture, but it’s important to different cultures,” he said. “It’s a chance just to promote cooking and eating together which has some sort of symbolism. It has real resonance for different cultures in different ways and different foods.
“Specific food preparation can reinforce confidence, pride and enjoyment in cultural identity. It is a point of connection with other people and has a deep emotional significance. Cooking is also a key skill and eating together helps to promote pro-social communication,” it said. It also detailed other means of bridging the racial gap between black men in prison and white prison staff who make up the majority of employees.
Black prisoners reported how tropes like the “race card” prevented them from speaking up about genuine incidents of racism and how they faced a disproportionate use of force by officers when they were found to make up around 13% of the prison population in 2020-21.
